The Movie Doctor

Movie Review: “Super 8”

I would like to start this movie review by just saying one sentence: J.J. Abrams is the new Steven Spielberg. Everything that is magical about Spielberg’s films, everything that makes it a “Spielberg” movie is not only displayed in Abrams’ Super 8 but brought to a new life by adding his unique style to the mix. Watching this film in the theaters was one of the most nostalgic experiences I have ever had while watching a movie. From seeing the insignia of Amblin Entertainment to the movie’s magical ending. This film is not only Abram’s best so far but definitely one of the best pictures of the year.

The film takes place in a small town in Ohio where a group of kids witness a great catastrophe that not only changes their lives but the lives of everyone else living in that town.

The combination of Abrams’ understanding of Spielberg’s magic touch, and his own are a wonderful mix on the screen. One of the greatest moments of the film is the train wreck sequence. It is so well executed and has to be one of the greatest action scenes every made. It is a pretty long sequence and I was at the edge of my chair the whole time. By the end of the scene I found myself completely on edge with my jaw dropped to the ground. Even though this sequence stood out in the film all the other action sequences are done with the same execution. All brilliant. All extremely intense and frightening. Another sequence that really showed Abram’s ability is the ending ,to not spoil the film instead of completely describing what I loved about it I will only say one thing. Watching it was one of the most heartfelt and magical moments I have ever had sitting in the theater. I almost cried.

What also took this movie to the next level was the talent of the younger cast members. Joel Courtney and Elle Fanning especially just blew me away. I see very bright futures for their careers. There is one scene in particular where both Joel and Elle’s characters connect. It’s just so beautifully acted. In a sea of modern bad child actors it is so refreshing to see these amazing kids show off their talent. Of course the cinematography by Larry Fong and Michael Giacchino’s score all help to make watching this movie such an incredible experience.

All in all Super 8 is an amazing film and is definitely my favorite movie of the year so far. It is everything that a summer blockbuster should be and even more. J.J. Abrams is an amazing director and I can not wait for his next film.
